The Gospel of Mark: Word for Word Bible Comic

Together magazine speaks to Simon Amadeus Pillario, the creator behind the new Gospel of Mark in the Word for Word Bible Comic Graphic Novel Series

Expected release date is 14.09.2018

What was behind your decision to produce a Gospel of Mark in the Word for Word Bible Comic series?

Since the conception of the Word for Word Bible Comic we have looked forward to producing a gospel. We did not want to begin with one as our mission was to bring out the amazing narratives in the Bible which are less wellknown and include some of the more mature themes. We wanted to build up to a gospel in regards to quality but we also wanted to give readers some of the context of the Good News first, as the Marvel Cinematic universe has done by creating the various origin stories of its superheroes before they join forces in later films. For our Bible series this was achieved by journeying through the Old Testament with characters like Moses, Joshua and King David whom Jesus talks about.

What are the unique features of this new Bible Comic on Mark’s gospel?

Aside from the three key elements that are in all our books: historical accuracy, every word of the scripture and an untamed visualising of events, the gospels also have some more unique elements that have come out through its creation...

Gospel harmonisation

While this graphic novel is only the events and words of The Gospel of Mark, we fully utilise the other gospels which paint in many details, contextual and setting elements that are not in the text alone. For example, scene changes that are not obvious from the text, or a list of people who are also present in a scene can easily be illuminated effortlessly with images.

A balanced representation of Jesus

So many films and other media take a slice of Jesus and portray it as the whole. By including every word Jesus speaks and every interaction, whether kind or wrathful, longsuffering or harsh, sad or joyful, we get a better picture of the person of Christ. Additionally, using the harmonisation and broader context of culture and Old Testament it is possible to better represent his demeanour and tone throughout.

Women in the gospel

Due to the cultural context, the text itself doesn’t make a fuss about the women that are involved in the gospel events (like the numbering of males only at the feeding of the 5,000). Several small verses let us know they are there all along, like Luke 8:2-3:  “Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.”

Therefore, in the images of the crowds, the disciples and the courts where the drama unfolds you will see the female characters like Mary Jesus’ mother, Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany, Marta, Joanna and Jesus’ sisters involved.

Locations

So many of the gospel stories occur in the Galilee region and in Capernaum, in particular, it’s actually quite surprising. Using maps, the real landscapes and colour schemes, the comic helps the reader easily keep track of, and get a window into, the locations of the events.

Who do you envisage are the readers of this new graphic novel of Mark’s gospel?

The readership is far greater than one might first imagine as graphic novels are read by a wide range of people of all ages. There are those who may never pick up a Bible to read but would be captivated reading the Gospel of Mark in this format. It is also a perfect gift for anyone who loves comics or who wants to get deeper into the word!
