Description

Food waste, food banks, and enjoying seasonal produce are all popular topics in today's society. As some families struggle with not enough food to live on, others are challenged to consider how much food they are throwing away, and make the food that they have go further. Others may be endeavouring to reduce 'food miles' and eat food that is in season, and has been locally produced. For different reasons, during World War 2, families faced similar struggles. The Rations Challenge is one writer's story of the Lenten challenge she set herself to purposely live on World War 2 rations and how it opened her eyes: 'I realised that many of the problems that people were facing in the 1940s hadn't gone away, and many people are still trying to make their food go further, reduce the waste that they generate, and appreciate where their food comes from.' Claud also appreciated the sense of community and family that comes from eating together and wanted to write about how we celebrate it.
